Monarch Airlines was founded in 1967, just as package holidays to
the meditteranean were becoming more and more popular.
Throughout the 1970's Monarch operated quite large jets compared to other charter airlines
of the day. They used wide body Boeing 720B's which are of the B707 family.
In 1980, Monarch became the first charter airline to buy the Boeing 757, which has
gone on to play a major part in charter operations (and scheduled) across the world over the next 25 years.
In 1985, Monarch started to operate its own scheduled flights, these are flights that
are not chartered by a tour operator.
Since then, Monarch has continued to grow and has survived all the pitfalls of the
past 7 years, that has seen many airlines disappear and continues to prosper into the future.
Monarch has placed an order for 6 Boeing 787 "Dreamliner" aircraft which are due for
delivery in 2010.
